Dr. Worek's research interests are in the areas of heat and mass transfer processes, thermodynamics, advanced energy systems and solar energy engineering. Current research projects include the simulation and testing of a new class of solid absorbents capable of being directly regenerated with natural gas. A portion of this research program focuses on the design of advanced desiccant-based cooling systems with performance approaching vapor-compression systems and having superior moisture control characteristics. Dr. Worek also is studying the effect of frost formation on the heat and mass transfer characteristics of heat transfer surfaces. A model capable of simulating conditions encountered in actual systems has been constructed and is being used in his work. In the area of alternative energy systems, work is being conducted on the engineering/economic benefits of gas technologies are compared to existing gas and electric systems and the benefits that result from utilizing the new technologies are assessed.
