Experience
Mr. Chojnowski has worked over the past ten years
in a variety of laboratory, manufacturing, and engineering facilities,
and has a broad set of skills and research experience. As a part-time
employee, he began his career at Argonne National Laboratory in
the Technology Development Division, working on fusion reactor cooling
research . This research involved performing finite element analyses,
designing lithium leak detection systems, temperature control systems,
data acquisition systems, and supervising students.
Mr. Chojnowski transferred to the Advanced Photon
Source (APS) Division at Argonne National Laboratory where he designed
and built a vacuum vessel to perform optical heat transfer experiments
to solve distortion problems with x-ray mirrors used at the facility.
This research was presented at a SPIE conference and resulted in
continued funding for the program. While at the APS, he collaborated
with NASA and Sandia National Laboratory on deep x-ray lithography
research, which included performing mechanical analyses and computer
simulations of photo-resist masks and substrates.
Upon completion of his Master’s Degree,
Mr. Chojnowski joined Caterpillar, Inc. as a project engineer, and
designed hydraulic systems and cooling systems. While at Caterpillar,
he served as the cooling system design leader for worldwide design
of the 980G 2001 tier II emissions compliant machine. This high-profile
program involved critical analysis and design, prototype fabrication,
and controlled environment testing. The prototype machine surpassed
all target performance and emission goals on initial testing.
In the year 2000, wanting to return to the scientific
R&D arena, Mr. Chojnowski accepted an offer to work for the
Oak Ridge National Laboratory on the Spallation Neutron Source Project
(SNS). The SNS, located at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory site,
is a $1B collaboration of six national laboratories to build the
world’s most powerful source of neutrons for research. At
the SNS, Mr. Chojnowski was the Group Leader of the Neutron Chopper
Development Group in the Experimental Facilities Division. His primary
function was the oversight of all neutron chopper development work.
This involved the design, fabrication, and testing of Eo, To, and
Bandwidth Limiting chopper systems. Other duties included supervising
mechanical engineers, technicians and designers; interfacing with
neutron scientists to develop specifications defining system requirements;
designing and constructing prototype neutron choppers; procuring
required laboratory equipment and completing field services; preparing
proposals, budgets and detailed work plans; selecting components;
procuring materials and equipment; and developing technical specifications
for contractors. Responsibilities also included managing a chopper
fabrication and testing laboratory, and an electronics and component
testing laboratory. He managed a group annual budget in excess of
$1M.
In late 2004, Mr. Chojnowski joined the Energy
Resources Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago as a Senior
Research Engineer. Currently he is designing and fabricating a state-of-the-art
air filtration testing laboratory on the campus. This test facility,
incorporating the most advanced, real-time chemical and particle
sampling and identification equipment currently available, is scheduled
for completion in 2006. The laboratory will comply with the ASHRAE
52.2-1999 Standard, as well as the pending ASHRAE 145.2P Standard
for full-scale testing of gaseous filtration media.
