Dr. Athanasios D. Bournakis is the Principal Research Economist of the Energy Resources Center (ERC), a University of Illinois at Chicago interdisciplinary public service, research and specials project organization dedicated to improving energy efficiency and the environment. In addition to activities, such as a study on "Energy and Environmental Issues for the Midwest Region," created at the invitation of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Dr. Bournakis' primary responsibility is to manage and direct the activities of the Energy Resources Center's Policy and Assessment (P&A) initiative, develop and organize new research activities, and oversee the research activities of other research personnel working in the Policy and Assessment area. Dr. Bournakis designs and develops analysis techniques and apply principles of economics to the problems of energy supply and demand, regulation, environmental issues, alternative energy sources, and directs and manages the cost-benefits analyses of new energy technologies. Since 1987, Dr. Bournakis established, developed, and manages the Policy and Assessment program of the Energy Resources Center of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Sponsored by the Gas Technology Institute (GTI), formerly Gas Research Institute, Dr. Bournakis' research activities have expanded significantly to include work in the following areas: 1) Measuring the Impact of GTI's Research. The objective of this task is to assess the overall economic impact of GTI's research, development and deployment of advanced natural gas technologies in the residential, commercial, industrial, power generation and natural gas vehicle sectors and evaluate industry cost savings generated in the production, processing, transmission, and distribution of natural gas; 2) GTI Corporate Performance Assessment: The objective of this task is to assess the impact of GTI's R&D and present the results to the GTI Board of Directors as part of the Board's annual evaluation of GTI's work; 3) Annual Report to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The objective of this task is to calculate the economic benefits to gas consumers from commercialized GTI R&D Projects and Products, relative to leading competing technologies, for GTI's annual report to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission; 4) Assistance to GTI Member Companies. The objective of this task is assist GTI members (local distributing companies, pipelines, and suppliers) with the evaluation of the economic benefits obtained by the member companies and their customers as a result of the successful introduction of GTI advanced gas technologies; and 5) Detailed Cost/Benefit Analysis of Selected GTI-Sponsored R&D Projects and Products. Other clients of Dr. Bournakis include the California Energy Commission (evaluating benefits for CEC's PIER program) and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affair.
