The effort of this research cluster focuses on resource assessments for renewable energy and biofuels processes as well as greenhouse gas life cycle and climate impact analyses of emissions related to different renewable energy and biofuels production pathways. We currently employ three engineers and one economist in this cluster.

Selected research topics include:

  • Combined heat and power systems fueled by renewable resources
  • Economic assessments of renewable energy and biofuels technologies
  • Biomass supply sources for electricity generation
  • Greenhouse gas emissions from renewable energy and biofuels production along different production pathways
  • Land use change associated with biofuels production
  • Monitoring of CO2 releases from carbon capture and sequestration projects
  • Resource and plant health assessment of biofuels crops

Employed equipment and tools:

Argonne National Laboratory's Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Transportation (GREET) Model

  • NASA developed hyperspectral sensor with airborne platform
  • ERDAS Imagine, ARC Info, and other GIS software tools
  • Survey research and statistical software tools
